‘MOTHER’ IMPROMPTU GESTURE DRAWING STUDY

A film director Junho Bong asked actress Heyja Kim to dance impromptu when he filmed the opening sequence of Mother(2009). This request was unusual for Bong, known for perfect preparation for his filmmaking. The completed opening sequence remained one of the most impressive openings in his filmography.

‘ Mother’ Impromptu Gesture Drawing was initiated based on a question: ‘What happens when an artist entrusts his or her a right of control over the work to someone?’  

By Tracking improvised gestures of Hyeja Kim via digital drawing, I tried to find the point where the tension between controllable and uncontrollable thing is created. This work is also a study of trying to find a way to capture and record not staged or controlled movements.
